My good girlfriend just introduced me to this Buddhist chant. I have done Hindu chants/mantras, so I already know the science and philosophy behind them. And yeah they do work. It’s all about the sound as sound is the fundamental thing in the universe. It permeates your being, your chakras, subconscious, and essence and transforms your life. She gave an example on how this chant has helped her numerous times. When she first moved out to Los Angeles, she moved in with her boyfriend. That didn’t work out so she needed to live elsewhere. Well thru chanting, she eventually got a good place with another girl (which actually is my friend from college). Then her job came next, and her current employer, Honda, found her…so she didn’t even need to apply to them. And now she has a great new car when before she had to ride the bus for hours to get around. Really it’s an inspiring story.
I believe everything happens for a reason and the fact that she gave this to me especially at this point in my life where I’m seeking change is quite significant. And I found this chant on youtube with Tina Turner doing it. And boy was I blown away. I felt tingling on my body. Then when I finally did it myself, I felt its power. There’s definitely a divine energy within those sounds. Here’s a nice video chant of NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO.

I really like this mantra, as you said it’s powerful.
Everytime I’m doing it I feel all the power of it going through my body, it’s pretty amazing.
I’m going to apply this mantra to my situation, and use all its power to guide me in my decisions.
The example of your friend is really inspiring, and I see as a very good sign to be introduce to the NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO chant at this time in my life where I need guidance.
I truly believe in the power of sound, and all the different techniques that use it. It is working for me, and I just hope for more people to become open to it.
Keep writing your blog, I love it.
I am an SGI-USA member and I received my Gohonzon when I was stationed in Japan in the Navy. I have quit smoking by chanting(chanted for 2 hours one night focusing on the desire to smoke to be gone), the desire to smoke vanished and no withdrawals, (have been smoke free for almost 9 months no nicotine replacement, this is the longest without nicotine in my body for the last 15 years of my life), have stayed sober WITHOUT a sponser in AA and WITHOUT working the 12 steps(virtual impossibility as they claim let alone me being my own higher power by using the Gohonzon chanting to run my own life), got an 1800 CC Suzuki Boulevard C109RT 2 years before I was sure I could get it due to being upside down on my loan on my Harley Dyna Superglide. My car is now permanately decluttered, it stays clean(that’s nothing short of a “miracle”). I have overcome chronic depression and daily suicidal thoughts-no pills. I am actually now a decent respectable person who shows up to work on time(used to be chronically and habitually late to work-two times about 4 hours late, usually at least 5-10 minutes late daily, very bad worker) but now I work very hard and am good at my job despite not liking it. I am thankful to be chanting until the day I die(hopefully for many more years into the future)!
Sorry, forgot one other thing. Been sober 24 hours a day since July 21, 2009 and nicotine free since August 6, 2009.
David,
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It’s so amazing how this chant has changed so many people’s lives. I am thrilled that you quit smoking and have a more positive outlook, especially overcoming depression. I struggled with major depression for years so I know what it’s like. Isn’t it amazing to live like this without harsh chemicals and/or drugs? Keep chanting, stay positive and may many more blessings come your way.
Peace and wellness,
Athena
