Inspired by Spoken Word

Last Friday, I got to see La Bruja for the first time. I knew that she was some sort of hip-hop artist or that she did poetry (more like spoken word). I really didn’t know what she was all about. And let me tell you something. She blew me away! She was so powerful, so poetic, and just plain beautiful. She had a voice that was strong-willed yet maternal, which I knew must’ve taken her a long time to develop.

I love the fact that she is a motivational speaker for young latinas. But really, I feel she motivates more than just that particular demo. She motivates people in all walks of life, including myself. She truly believes in the power within you and how you can change your reality with the power of words. Even before I met La Bruja, I too believed in the power of choosing your words and thoughts. I’ve been going through some stressful times as of lately, and she came into my life at the right time and the right place. Her spoken word reminded me of the power of our choice. She reminded me of how all us truly deserve the best and only the best.

Furthermore, La Bruja is a wonderful orator. She knows how to express herself eloquently. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and talk about deep subjects like preserving one’s virginity and resisting societal pressures. She actually said this to the women in the audience: “Your body is a temple! Only let people in if they are there to worship!” Once she said that, my pro-femme values were definitely revitalized.

Most importantly, she encouraged each and every one of us to speak our minds. And here I am expressing myself on how much I appreciate La Bruja and people just like her. I’ve been self-expressing all my life and find it a wonderful gift. I know that when people can find themselves through words, art, and creative expression, doors start opening to bigger and better things. Life becomes absolutely brilliant!
