So a few weeks ago (or months ago), I started seeing advertising for the film 300. And I immediately thought to myself, “THIS is stupid.” Every time I logged onto MySpace, I kept seeing rampant advertising. Now, I know a thing about marketing and advertising, and when a movie is seen rampant throughout the web, well I would think the studio is a bit nervous for its release. Then in my Leonard Maltin class, they were showing it. I knew about it, but I decided to skip and go to a party instead.
Then one night soon after I dreamt about the movie. Not only did I dream about the movie, but I was in it. I was LIVING in Sparta. I was a Spartan woman! I remember being in the beautiful grassy fields with my flowing tunic on. I had a little boy around me as well. I was also gathering the women and children to hide in our secret shelters because we were about to be invaded.
So a few days go by, and I get a phone call from an friend I haven’t hung out with in a long time, Dustin. He wanted me to go with him and Martin to see the movie 300. Oh how I immediately thought it was just like the old days. We used to hang out all the time and watch movies together, eat together, etc. However, I didn’t like the movie they picked. I said it would just be straight up violence and gore, and that I was not into that sort of thing. But Dustin persisted. Then that’s when I made a joke and told him I had a dream that I was living in the Spartan setting. He then tells me that I must go because dreaming about it is a sign. Alright, he won, and besides, it’s good to catch up with good friends.
So I watched the movie, and boy was I blown away. I was captivated through most of it. 300 has been the most visually appealing movie I have seen in a long, long time. It was done so stylistically sweet that I could almost taste the screen. And did I mention boys (I said it as an expression just a few sentences back)? The movie was full of not boys, but handsome, buff men who happened to be practically naked throughout the entirety of the film! Yikes! Whoever said it was a guy film? It probably would have had bigger success if it were targeted towards women. Ha.
I really loved the story of the Spartan people. Men and women were strong and capable. The men protected their women and families. The women protected their young and kept the men in check. In addition, the women had just as much authority as the men did. When the men were fighting to protect their way of life (freedom, truth, happiness), the women were put in charge of the household.
Anyway, the point of my dream was to show me that I too am a Spartan woman. I am strong and wise as well as caring and nurturing. I am a true leader who defends what is true. On a slight tangent, that movie also reignited my love for the silver screen and the magic of storytelling and the creative visuals that go with it.
Anyone can find inspiration in a movie or piece of entertainment. Actually, great movie characters can be wonderful reminders of human capacity and potential. I believe we have a little Spartan in all of us. We too can be strong willed individuals that fight for what we truly believe in.
I am Sparta! I am Storyteller! I am Storyteller of Sparta on the big screen!
